About Amy...
I have “escaped” from San Bernardino, labeled the “worst city in California” and one of the most dangerous in the United States. However, I have begun to visually consider and explore the city and how it has shaped me. Growing up primarily in the disenfranchised “westside” of San Bernardino, I quickly realized how isolated and forgotten my neighborhood was. The street bridges that segregate the city, are both meant to enclose the people but offer no glimpse to the issues from travelers that often go through on the way to another destination. I primarily photograph in San Bernardino to acknowledge my appreciation of its assets and hope for its future despite its shortcomings. The city is a reflection of the larger Southern California population that has been all but forgotten and looked down upon; however it resembles much of the country that created it. My photographs attempt to capture a city that is spoken about yet completely ignored. The corner liquor stores become touchstones, embodying memories of the families who walk to them for their families meals or to quickly have a moment alone. I utilize the early morning light that illuminates the city when it is quiet and I photograph to cultivate warmth and a new sense of renewal. (Romero, Dennis.
